I researched the ingredient lists of the most popular lip balms products...

And here is what concerns me the most.

Almost 70% of these products included “Parfum” and 30% claimed the presence of “Aroma”.

So which term is correct - “Aroma” or “Parfum”?

Or maybe both?

Here`s my explanation.

1. Both terms are used for labeling perfume and aromatic compositions.

2. In the INCI nomenclature, "Parfum" means any substance that produce or mask an odor.

3. And "Aroma" is reserved for materials that provide or mask a flavor.

4. Fragrance used in lip products must comply with IFRA Standards and have an approved flavor material status.

5. Fragrance without an approved flavor status are banned in lip products.

“An approved flavor status” means that the term “Aroma” is the correct one.

Now you know how to label your lip products properly!

PS: Be sure to check all the raw materials and their MSDS carefully.
