SCCS is looking into whether Salicylic Acid is safe to use in cosmetics for kids

The preliminary opinion is already published

But it`s also open for public comments until 25th March 2025

Here’s what SCCS has concluded so far:

  • Salicylic Acid is not safe as a preservative at 0,5%.

  • The exceptions are body lotions and single-use dermal/oral products.

  • This opinion does not apply to spray products.

  • Also, Salicylic Acid has been considered a major eye irritant.

Besides that

  • Salicylic Acid is not safe when used up to 3% in rinse-off products (kids shampoos, conditioners etc.).
  • It is not safe when used up to 2% in selected topical products (face moisturizer, hand cream, liquid soap and shower gel)

  • And it`s not safe up to 0.5% for body lotion.

But there`s more

  • SCCS recommends limiting Salicylic Acid to 0.1% to make it safer for dermal children products and toothpastes.
